Deer Lick Shelters
Last night I slept well dispite the noise. I find I am sleeping really well on the wooden floors now that I have started putting my rain jacket under my lumbar. Some of my shelter mates made a lot of noise getting up so I got up too and got on the trail by 7:30 A.M..
I was pleased with the early start in part to escape the coming heat and the morning was indead comfortably cool. There was a light rain which did a nice job of keeping things cool most of the day.
The trail was easy going and exactly as Wingheart had told me. There are sort very very rough and rocky streaches followed by long nearly smooth flat sections so in the end ones pace stays about the same.
At the High Peak side trail junction I nearly keeping marching through to make miles before I caught myself and asked why I was in such a hurry. I sure am glad I did to. Highpeak is a rocky bluff the provides a great view of the exspansive flat valley below though again haze hampered my views. What I did get to see is a hangglider just finishing his final checks and jumping off the ramp up there and drifting off. It looked wonderful and made me long to do the same. Another one had found a thermal and was swooping about 50' above my head.
Shortly later I passed through Pen Mar State Park where I took a break with some fellow thru hikers and crossed the Maryland to Pennsylvania boarder which is also the Mason Dixon line. I never quite figured out the signifance of that, I will have to look it up when I have a chance.
I was running low on food so at the road crossing to Waynesboro I was going to get a hitch. However on the way I ran into a couple coming back from a day hike who offered me ride to a grocery store if I waited for them at the next road crossing which I did. Not only did they give me a lift into town but they waited for me to shop and gave me a lift back. I did my quickest resupply ever getting what I needed in about 10 minutes. They were very nice and saved me a lot of time.
Back at the road crossing I struck up a conversation with a friendly weekender for a while before pushing north to tonights shelter. A lot farmiliar faces are here;Ranger, Flyaway, Katter-pilller, Dragon Breath, and Little foot.
